What Is the Best Dr. Pen to Buy?

What Is the Best Dr. Pen to Buy?

The short answer

The Dr. Pen A20. It is the device most of our customers choose, by a wide margin. If that is more than you want to spend, the Dr. Pen M8 is our lowest-priced device and still one we would put in a professional's hands.

We get this question every day, and the answer depends on three things: what you are treating, whether you need repeatable depth settings, and which cartridge platform you want to be buying into for the next few years.

Here is how we would answer it if you rang us.

Best overall: Dr. Pen A20

Nine needle-depth settings from 0 to 2.0mm in fixed 0.25mm steps, six speed levels up to 7,700 RPM, AVOS vertical oscillation, a 700mAh battery over Type-C, and FDA 510(k) clearance.

The fixed depth steps are what separate it. Every other model uses a continuous dial, so you are setting depth by eye and hoping to land in the same place next time. If you are treating scars over six months, repeating exactly the same setting is worth more than any speed figure on the box.

Widest cartridge choice we stock: 12, 14, 18, 24, 36, 42 and nano.

Best value: Dr. Pen M8

The M8 is our lowest-priced device and it also has the fastest motor in the range at 18,000 RPM. Six speed levels, 0 to 2.5mm on a dial, four-hour battery, ships with two 16-pin cartridges.

The part that is easy to overlook: its cartridges are the cheapest of any platform we stock. Cartridges are single use, so over two years of regular treatment you will spend more on them than on the pen — which means the cheaper platform quietly saves you more than the cheaper device does.

With spares included: M8 Starter Kit.

Best for hair loss: Dr. Pen M8S

The M8S uses cartridges with an improved anti-backflow design. Working flat across the face, that barely registers. Working the scalp at an angle with liquid serum, it is the thing people notice — with a standard cartridge, serum travels back into the housing.

Device plus scalp cartridges together: Anti-Hair Loss Bundle.

Best for serum infusion: HydraPen H3

The HydraPen H3 releases serum through the cartridge head while you work, so product enters the micro-channels as they open. It is a different tool rather than a better pen — if you need adjustable depth for scars, a standard pen is the one to look at.

What does not decide it

Skin type. Every Dr. Pen works on every skin type. What you adjust is depth and frequency, not the device.

Motor speed on its own. A faster motor glides more smoothly and reduces drag, which is a real comfort benefit. It is just not a ranking: the M8 has the fastest motor in the range and is also our lowest-priced device.

How the device looks. Pick the one you will enjoy picking up — it will not change your results either way.

What actually decides it

The cartridge platform. The one worth thinking about first. Cartridges are single use, and Dr. Pen builds each one to match a specific handpiece — A20 cartridges fit the A20, M8 cartridges fit the M8, and so on. You are choosing a consumable supply for as long as you own the pen, so it is worth a moment's checking. Our cartridge guide shows which fits what, and if you are ever unsure, send us a photo of your pen and we will confirm it for you.

Depth control. If you are treating scars, repeating a setting exactly matters more than any other feature. That is the A20's real advantage.

What you are treating. Scalp, face and body have different demands. Match the device to the job, not to the price tag.

Buying a genuine device

Counterfeit Dr. Pen units are common and are not safe to use on skin. Genuine devices can be verified through the manufacturer's security-verification system using the code on the box. If a price sits far below what official stockists charge, it is worth checking before you buy.

Still deciding? Our full model comparison puts every device side by side with verified specifications, and Dr. Pen M8 vs M8S covers the two models people most often ask us about. You are also welcome to just message us — we are happy to talk it through.
